More Detail

IB Physics SL/HL
IB Physics SL/HL is one of the most challenging and rewarding science courses in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. FenDoDo’s IB Physics course is designed to help students confidently tackle all topics, from mechanics to quantum physics, with a focus on both conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. Our experienced tutors guide you through the syllabus, equip you with IB exam strategies, and provide full support for IA and lab work.

Course Content

  • Core Topics (SL & HL):
    • Measurements & Uncertainties
    • Mechanics (kinematics, dynamics, energy, momentum, circular motion, gravitation)
    • Thermal Physics
    • Waves (oscillations, wave phenomena, sound, light)
    • Electricity & Magnetism (electric fields, circuits, electromagnetic induction)
    • Modern Physics (atomic, nuclear, quantum physics)
  • Additional HL Topics:
    • Wave phenomena (Doppler effect, resolution, diffraction)
    • Fields (gravitational, electric, magnetic fields, field theory)
    • Electromagnetic induction & alternating current
    • Quantum & Nuclear physics (energy levels, nuclear reactions, radioactivity)
    • Option topics (Astrophysics, Engineering Physics, Imaging, Relativity, etc.)
  • Internal Assessment (IA): Research, lab design, data analysis, evaluation, and writing support.
  • Lab Skills: Experimental design, error analysis, graphing, and reporting in IB format.
  • Exam Practice: Real IB past papers, question banks, time management, and markscheme training.

Exam Structure

  • External Assessment
    • Paper 1 (SL: 1 hr 30 min, HL: 2 hr) — Multiple-choice and short-answer questions covering core topics such as mechanics, thermodynamics, waves, electricity, and modern physics (HL includes additional higher-level topics).
    • Paper 2 (SL: 1 hr 15 min, HL: 1 hr 30 min) — Data-based questions, extended-response problems, and experimental analysis.
    • Paper 3 (HL only, 1 hr) — Optional higher-level questions, including experimental design and advanced problem-solving.
  • Internal Assessment (IA)
    • Students conduct an experimental investigation, demonstrating data collection, analysis, and reporting skills, applying core physics concepts to a real-world or theoretical scenario.

Skills Developed

  • Critical thinking and application of physics concepts
  • Advanced problem solving and mathematical modeling
  • Experimental skills and scientific writing for IA
  • Data analysis, graphing, and uncertainty evaluation
  • Exam strategy for Paper 1 (MCQ), Paper 2 (structured), and Paper 3 (options/IA)

Who Should Take IB Physics?

  • IB DP students (SL or HL) seeking higher grades and university credit
  • Learners aiming for a 6 or 7 on the IB Physics exam
  • Students needing IA guidance or additional lab/practical support
  • Anyone looking to strengthen their foundation for STEM or engineering majors
  • International students preparing for global university admissions

College Credit

Many U.S. colleges grant credit or advanced placement for high IB Physics SL or HL scores. This can satisfy introductory physics or lab course requirements, allowing students to progress to higher-level physics, engineering, or STEM courses earlier in their college curriculum.
  • SL (Standard Level): Often qualifies for introductory psychology courses
  • HL (Higher Level): Often qualifies for first-year college-level physics courses, depending on the institution
