LSAT Overview

The LSAT (Law School Admission Test) is a standardized exam required for admission to most U.S. and Canadian law schools. It is administered by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) and is designed to assess the key skills needed for success in law school, such as critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and reading comprehension.

Exam Scructure & Section

The LSAT is a digital exam lasting about 3 hours, plus an additional online writing sample.
It consists of:

Logical Reasoning (2 sections)
  • Short passages followed by a single multiple-choice question.
  • Tests the ability to analyze and evaluate arguments.
  • 24–26 questions per section.
Analytical Reasoning (Logic Games, 1 section)
  • Logic puzzles such as sequencing or grouping.
  • Tests deductive reasoning and ability to draw inferences.
  • About 23 questions total.
Reading Comprehension (1 section)
  • Dense passages covering law, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.
  • Includes comparative reading of paired passages.
  • About 27 questions total.
Unscored Variable Section (1 section)
  • Could be Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, or Logic Games.
  • Used for testing new questions; unscored, but indistinguishable from scored sections.
Writing Sample (Unscored, Required)
  • 35-minute online essay task taken separately.
  • Law schools review for clarity, reasoning, and writing style.

Scoring System

  • Range: 120–180
  • Average: ~152
  • Top Law Schools: 165–175+
  • Method: Number of correct answers only (no penalty for wrong answers).
  • Percentiles: A score of 170 ranks roughly in the 97th percentile of all test takers.

The LSAT is not about memorization—it’s about mastering logic, reasoning, and timed strategies.
