TOEFL Overview
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a globally recognized English proficiency test for non-native speakers. Since its launch in 1964 as a paper-based test (PBT), TOEFL has evolved to meet modern academic needs and technology standards.
- 1964 – Paper-Based Test (PBT): Assessed listening, grammar, structure, and reading; optional writing; no speaking. Scores: 310–677.
- 1998 – Computer-Based Test (CBT): Added computer delivery; tested listening, reading, writing. Scores: 0–300. No speaking section.
- 2006 – Internet-Based Test (iBT): Four integrated skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Scores: 0–120.
- 2023 Update: iBT shortened to ~2 hours. “Writing for an Academic Discussion” task replaced the independent essay. All four sections remain.
